Eplilogue
The ride as a whole was fantastic, and I felt very proud of myself to have done it. There are some things that I would change. First and foremost I will invest in a camping guide next time since many of the
campgrounds I visited were really bad, and I would have planed the route accordingly. I would also take less clothes with me a couple of things I
didn't need, and didn't want to throw away but were too expensive to mail home. It would have been nicer going about a month
earlier as it got very hot in Italy and Greece. But the weather was perfect before the Alps so it was really one or the other. I had not gone camping for many years prior to this tour, and I have learned a lot, also from talking to other campers. Belgium,
Luxemburg, France, Germany and Switzerland were very nice to cycle in, with many and various fast foods and
sandwich shops. Most of the camping's were clean and reasonably priced. The ride all the way to lake Como, Italy was very nice, and also the area around lake Iseo. But from lake Iseo to Parco Nationale del Gargano, Italy it was boring, dirty, noisy, and I would not
recommend it. Also the there is not enough fast foods in Italy and also found Italy on the expensive side. Most of the
camping's in Italy were bad and far in-between, at least the ones I visited. It will be a very long time before the eastern coast Italy
see me again avoid the east coast if possible.
Greece was a welcome sight after Italy. The roads were
better than in Italy and the drivers more courteous. The sea was much nicer to swim in, the food was much cheaper and there were many more fast foods than then countries between Belgium and Italy. Northern Greece is very
beautiful and I would highly recommend cycling there, I will definitely be going back there, hopefully by bike with my wife. It is hilly country though, and one has to be somewhat fit to cycle there,
especially in the heat of the summer months. The further south I went, the
dirtier it got along the side of all the major roads, there was a lot of garbage, mostly plastic water bottles, and always before the large towns and
cities like Patras and Korintos. Greece is highly underrated as a cycling country, and a lot of cyclists are missing
allot. Anyone wishing to cycle in Italy I would tell them to check out Greece first. For me
personally I will not be taking another type of vacation. I'm hooked on touring and have really fell in love this form of travel. The people I met, and the places I have seen, were
truly a great experience, and I loved every minute of it. Even the rainy days dint bother me it was just fun. I'm hoping that my wife would like to tour also, it would be nice to have her along on my next tour. I'm already
planning the next one and I have a few places in mind but that's for my other web page.
I hope you enjoyed my website.
Goodbye for now, and safe journey's. |
