Maastricht to Athens June 4th to July 17th 2005 My first tour, solo.
Welcome to my homepage.
A bit about myself, I am a 45 year old Greek-American living in Holland. I'm married to a Dutch girl and have a teenaged daughter. A little about myself, I'm a Jack of all trades, from repairing bicycles to calibrating jet fuel controls for commercial and millitary aircraft. My main hobby is cooking which makes it extremely difficult for my diet and my favorite sport is cycle touring, not racing. I like to do all day tours, setting off early in the morning and cycling eight to ten hours. Last summer and fall I averaged 110kms a day, the longest being 145kms, for three days a week. This page is about the dream I have had for the past five years of cycling from my home in Maastricht, The Netherlands to my ancestral home in Athens, Greece. In December of 2004 I decided the spring of 2005 would be the best opportunity to make my dream come true. So I got out an old Auto route express 98 (Europe), that someone had given me a long time ago and drew a rough map of the tour, just to see how far it be and how long it would take. (2800 kms) Averaging around a conservative 100 kms a day that makes it 28 days. I am counting on six weeks, so I will have several rest days in between. This after all is not a race but a long cycling vacation. I will be organized camping about 90%, and rooms about 10%. If and when I can I will stop at internet cafes on the way and write my journals. As for pictures you will have to wait until I get back home to download them on this site, I think it will take too much of my time doing it in a internet cafe. It would have been nice to cycle back to Maastricht via a different route but time and the threat of the July and August heat, does not allow me to do that. I hope you enjoy the site and if you have any questions, tips about the places that I will visit on route, please let me know. I will be constantly adding new material and trying to improve this site, SO DO COME BACK. ![]() ![]() ![]() |
